We love our collies and know that many people are just as attached to their dogs, so we’re thankful that Jekyll is such a dog-friendly island. Bringing your dog to the beach can be tremendous fun. Jekyll Island is a Georgia state park, and the entire island is state-owned. Many Georgia state parks, including Jekyll, are pet-friendly! Leashed dogs are welcome on most Jekyll beaches, but some remote areas where birds and turtles are being especially protected prohibit them.
What if you have allergies and you’d like to stay at Jekyll Sandpiper? We do permit dogs, except for a small list of breeds that our insurance won’t allow, and we have our own collies. Our house has tile flooring, though, making it easier to clean. We also ask our renters to keep their dogs off the beds and the furniture. Our cleaner is at the house after every renter’s stay.
Where Can I Take my Dog?
Leashed dogs are welcome at Great Dunes Beach, Sandpiper Beach, St. Andrew’s Beach, Clam Creek Picnic Area, Driftwood Beach, and most other beaches on the island. They are not allowed, however, from South Dunes Picnic Area going south to the shrimp boat wreck and then for some distance going back east toward St. Andrew’s Beach.
Owners are responsible for keeping their dogs out of all sand dunes. The Jekyll Island Authority (JIA) has set up many stations with free poop bags, and guests should to clean up after their pets.
Tips for your Dog
Provide your dog with fresh water and plenty of shade, especially after a walk on the beach. Consider walking your dog on Jekyll’s hard-packed sand areas; the white fluffy sand can be too hot for your dog’s paws. Some dogs like to drink salt water, but that is not good for them. When you return from the beach, rinse their paws to remove sand and salt. At Jekyll Sandpiper, we have hoses and an outdoor shower. We have heard that you can purchase dog sun screen for dogs with light skin or short hair, so if you are planning a longer day at the beach with your pet, consider that option, too.
Many of our restaurants have outdoor seating areas where dogs are welcome. See our article on Dog-Friendly Restaurants for more information.
