On trips to Europe we’ve often seen dogs in public spaces, and Americans are increasingly including their pets on outings. Georgia State Parks are often dog-friendly, and many Jekyll Sandpiper renters bring their to dogs to share the family vacation. But please inquiry with us first as some restrictions apply. Dogs are welcome on most island beaches when leashed, and several island restaurants welcome pets in their outdoor seating areas. If this will be a new experience for your dog, we recommend first trying an outing during a quite period of the day.
The website BringFido lists a number of pet-friendly Jekyll restaurants. They include Red Bug Motors, Tortuga Jacks, Beach House Restaurant, Jekyll Market’s Boardwalk Deli, The Reserve, Fuse Jekyll Island, and McGarvey’s Wee Pub. Be aware, however, that BringFido incorrectly lists the island’s Dairy Queen as pet-friendly. The Dairy Queen neither allows pets nor offers the traditional Dairy Queen pup cup.
Red Bug Motors has a small outdoor area surrounded by a nice grassy space, so dogs will not feel overly crowded. Fuse, Wee Pub, and Boardwalk Deli are all sidewalk cafes in the Beach Village area, with seating where people are walking to nearby shops. Some dogs may find this too engaging, so take that into account when visiting.
The other restaurants have small outdoor patios and may require arriving early in order to grab a desired spot. Although other island restaurants are not listed at BringFido, we recommend calling ahead to check anyway. We suspect those with outdoor seating might accommodate diners during less busy hours.
