Where to Eat – Driftwood Bistro
Driftwood Bistro is a casual restaurant in the Villas By the Sea complex on Jekyll’s north end. It is well known by locals because they have good food at reasonable prices. You can even get petite plates that include half-sized entrees and smaller sides. The restaurant specializes in Low Country Cuisine, sort of home cooking for the area. Seafood specialties include Shrimp and Grits and Stuffed Flounder, two of my favorites. But they also have many dishes for the non-seafood eater, such as Meatloaf and Pot Roast. Their side are good, too! Each entree comes with two of them, and we have problems choosing. The Sweet Potato Souffle, Fried Okra, and Squash Casserole are among our usual choices. Oh no! My husband says don’t forget the Fried Green Tomatoes.
The last time we were there, they had $10 per bottle wine specials. Several of us enjoyed a bottle of the house red. But Dad always orders Yuengling beer. I’ve only had room for dessert once. I think I ordered their Georgia Bourbon Peach Cobbler; it was great! You can get it with or without ice cream.
The Bistro often gets crowded after 6 PM, with people waiting for a table. Unfortunately, they don’t take reservations. We need to warn you that the restaurant is not friendly to large groups. Once you get to around ten people, they will split you up. The owner will not budge on this! So please take this into account before you decide to visit. If you have a largish group, you can always call them to see if they can accommodate you at one table.
If you eat an early meal (and avoid the rush), you will have time for a quick after-dinner stroll along Driftwood Beach or a walk through the salt water marsh. Both are very close to the restaurant and quite pretty at sunset. You could also cross Beachview to nearby Horton Pond, where you’ll certainly see turtles, and you might catch a glimpse of an alligator or two.
$$ – Entrees $10 – $20.
