Tideland Nature Center provides guided kayaking tours of the local marshes. Tours depart from the Jekyll boat ramp, which is located on the west side of the island near the nature center. Prior to departure, the tour guides fit participants with life jackets. They also provide basic information about how to use a kayak. On a recent trip they made a stop at Shark Tooth Beach, but other groups choose to spend more time paddling through the salt water marsh. Jekyll Sandpiper renters will have the chance to see such shore birds as the pelican or egret. You might view thousands of fiddler crabs or see dolphins swimming nearby.
Two hour and three hour trips are available, with prices ranging from $57 to $65, depending on tour length and kayak size. Trip times vary with the tides, so call ahead for additional details and to reserve your trip.
Boats and Biology
The Boats and Biology guided tour of Tidelands’ saltwater pond meets on Friday, June 22nd and July 20th, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Try out a canoe, kayak, or aquabike and learn about the animals that live in or near the pond.
You can also rent a canoe or aquabike for use in Tideland’s 17-acre saltwater pond. Anyone that can swim and wear a life jacket can rent one of these vehicles. This is a great way to try out one of these vehicles in a fairly protected environment, with the chance to explore the nature at the same time. Canoes cost $20 per hour or $40 for the day. Aquabikes are $20 per half-hour. You do not need any reservations for the rentals, which are available during the center’s business hours. Canoe rentals for fishing in the pond are also allowed, just bring your own gear.
