Summer Programs on Jekyll Island – Tidelands Nature Center

Summer Programs on Jekyll Island
Summer Programs

Tidelands is one of the Jekyll organizations that offers summer programs. It is a nature center where Jekyll Sandpiper visitors can go to learn about the diverse nature of the island.  Their facility packs in opportunities to see and sometimes touch live shells, horseshoe crabs, fish, and turtles.  The center sits next to a saltwater pond and is open Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM – 4:00 AM, and Saturday and Sunday, 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM, at a cost of $5 / person.

During the summer, from June 1st to July 31st, the center offers unique one hour long experiences for the entire family.  These programs are available in three time slots: morning, mid-morning, and twice a month at night. All of these programs cost $7 / person and include admission the nature center exhibits. So if you were already planning a visit to the center, each program costs only an additional $2 / person.

Morning Offerings: 9 – 10 AM

The Nature Center offers nature walks on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and are the only programs offered outside the summer months, from March to October.  Mondays’s walk explores the Clam Creek picnic area, with its beach and marsh. Wednesday’s walk explores St. Andrews Beach, and Friday’s walk covers the South Dunes forest and beach. An experienced guide will take you on a walk and share information about Jekyll’s landscape and wildlife.

On Tuesday morning the “Go Fish!” program will provide all the gear and bait as the staff teaches the basics of fishing. Participants learn how to cast and perhaps catch a fish.  Thursday morning’s program, titled Creepy Crawlers, offers participants the chance to meet the reptiles at the center, including non-venomous snakes and turtles.

The Tuesday and Thursday programs are available in June and July.

Mid-Morning Offerings: 10:45 – 11:45 AM

Mid-Morning Brunch meets Mondays and Wednesdays. Participants have the chance to watch and help feed the center’s animal ambassadors as they learn about marine food webs.  It is a great chance to see the animals, as even the shy ones are likely to make an appearance for a yummy snack.  On Tuesdays you can participate in the Summer Seining program. Thursdays offer Bed, Bath, and Beyond, a chance to see all the details of how center staff care for animals in the live enclosures. Friday’s Coastal Explorers program targets children 4-10 and explores native animals and ecosystems. This program often includes a craft related to the theme of the day, which varies each week. This programs covers fossils, saltwater marshes, sea turtles, bird watching, and more.

The Mid-Morning programs occur from June 1 to July 31.

Astronomy Nights: 9:00 – 10 PM

Jekyll has darker skies than many more populated areas.  Meet to view the night sky through a telescope, while the program leader discusses the stars and planets. Meets some Wednesdays: June 6th and 20th, July 11th and 25th.

In addition to these programs, Tidelands offers Summer Day Camps and Kayaking the Marsh experiences.
